KING MEMORIAL LIBRARY INTERNET USE POLICY
The Internet is available of all computers in the Library. The Library’s Internet workstations may not be used for any purposes which violate U.S. or state laws, to transmit threatening, obscene or harassing materials, or to interfere with or disrupt network users, services, or equipment. Disruptions include, but are not limited to: distribution of unsolicited advertising, propagation of computer worms or viruses, and using the workstations to make unauthorized entry to any other machine accessible via the network. Illegal acts involving the Library’s Internet work stations may be subject to prosecution by local, state, and federal authorities.
Information gathered from the Internet may not always be reliable, accurate, complete, or current. Use of the Internet for information gathering purposes is at the patron’s own risk. As Internet activity and search histories are considered private and confidential, the Library will take measures to protect the privacy of its patrons.
The display of pornographic material from the Internet will not be tolerated. Patrons will be asked to disconnect from that website, leave the computer workstation, and leave the library premises. Person’s age 18 and older may use the Internet after showing their Chautauqua-Cattaraugus System Library Card. These persons may use one of our five “Adult” computers. Those under the age of 18 may use the one of the four Youth/Children’s filtered computers, and must also possess a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus System Library Card. Parents of young children (ages eight and under) must be present if their children are using the Internet.
Access to Inappropriate Material To the extent practical, technology protection measures (or “Internet filters”) shall be used to block or filter Internet access, or other forms of electronic communications, to inappropriate information, as required by the Children’s Internet Protection Act. Blocking shall be applied to visual depictions of material deemed obscene or child pornography, or to any material deemed harmful to minors. Subject to staff supervision, technology protection measures may be disabled for adults or, in the case of minors, minimized only for bona fide research or other lawful purposes. Procedures for the disabling or otherwise modifying any technology protection measures shall be the responsibility of the Library Director or appointed representative. No Internet filter is 100% effective and library staff cannot act In Loco Parentis. Parents/guardians are responsible for the Internet behavior of their minor children. The Library will comply with the requirements of Children’s Internet Protection Act while upholding the constitutional and legal rights to privacy and confidentiality of their patrons.
